If you’re one of those ‘purists’ who is unable to stand the thought of pineapple on pizza I’m sorry but our choice is definitely going to offend. Carly and I both LOVE hawaiian pizza, and I’m pleased to say this one from the Crust Classic Range didn’t disappoint. We order a medium sized gluten free base ($16) which has a tasty tomato base, ham and chunks of pineapple.
The cheese on top is lightly caramelised and toasty; it coats my mouth and offers that moorish decadence that a great pizza can do.
Since we always order gluten free base, we have a decent basis for comparison. Crust’s version is not anywhere near as stodgy as they can be nor does it have that cardboardesque texture. This one is soft, tasty and holds together.
Our second pizza choice was from the meat selection – the Mediterranean Lamb ($21 for a medium sized gluten free base). We initially wanted the Moroccan Lamb but were sadly informed you couldn’t select that for gluten free.
As Carly has fructose malabsorbtion and I’m allergic to capsicum, we had to amend the toppings slightly. Normally it’s a slow cooked marinated lamb, tomatoes, green capsicum, spanish onions, feta and oregano pizza on a garlic infused base with mint yoghurt and lemon. We omitted the onions and capsicum, and swapped the garlic base for a tomato one. Fingers crossed it tastes good we both said!
And yes, it did. The lamb is tender and fragrant; the yoghurt topping absolutely delicious. We squeeze the lemon over the top (sadly there were pips whoops!) and the added acidity lifts each bite. It’s a really enjoyable pizza.
When we arrived at Crust to pick up our pizzas, we both head straight to the freezer to check out the dessert options. They sell ice-cream and the flavours sound amazing. We umm and argh for a moment, before settling on the Salted Caramel Ice-Cream and Blood Orange Sorbet ($4.50 each). Both are gluten free and look incredible.
The salted caramel is… yes, amazing. Salty, creamy and decadent. It’s oozy in all the right ways, sticky from the caramel that’s ribboned through it. This is something I can definitely see myself returning to eat in the future! If only you could buy bigger tubs to store at home for the times when cravings strike.
The blood orange sorbet is sugary and velvety; punchy with the level of acidity. I really like it, it’s sour but sweet at the same time and has a lovely consistency which rolls around on my tongue. Next time I go to Crust I will definitely need to try the Peanut Butter Disaster – it is just the kind of flavour that’s right up my alley.
All in all my first Crust experience was pretty enjoyable. The pizzas are inventive but not in the over-the-top manner that other places can have. I’m looking forward to trying some other flavours soon.
