There’s no denying, I love brunch dates out. Sunshine, fresh air, aesthetically pleasing lighting and of course, all the delicious and diverse things that make up brunch menus. These are totally my jam. And finding new places to try, that’s definitely a favourite pastime of mine.
Cue: Cherry and Grapes in West Perth, which I was recently invited to visit. With my husband Jeremy in tow, we headed in one Saturday morning to try it out. Immediately I was impressed by the decor, with greenery throughout, exposed brick and of course, a pastry table to end all pastry tables. But I’ll come back to the croissants in a bit… I need to prepare myself before I gush.
This cafe is really well known for having a solid A-game when it comes to coffee. But sadly that’s not my thing, but Jeremy was all too happy to take their recommendation and try a cold brew. He wasn’t disappointed with his choice!
I opted for a rosemary lemonade which was really great. Just the right amount of herb flavour, while still being both tart and sweet. This was my kinda drink.
For my breakfast dish I chose the mushroom arancini (I mean who doesn’t love arancini at any time of the day!) with a rich tomato sauce, parmesan and a wintery salad with roasted beetroot and pumpkin.
It was delicious and so filling! I thought the crumb on the outside was crispy and crunchy, the inside well seasoned, creamy and flavoursome. The sauce worked well, and despite sitting underneath each ball it didn’t make it soggy at all. A really nice dish, that I found very satisfying – and filled me up to the brim.
Jeremy ordered the smashed avocado with charred corn, poached eggs and goats cheese – and doesn’t it just look glorious! I’ll never tire of avocado for brekky, and if he hadn’t ordered this I so would have. I really liked the touch of the cheese, which had creaminess and a little bite. And that corn – mmmm. People who don’t love corn, I really don’t understand you.
So it’s safe to say we really enjoyed the food at Cherry and Grapes! But it was the service we liked even more. The team here were so warm and friendly, chatting to us and telling us all about the different dishes and items on the menu – and the plans for the business. I love these kinds of moments where you can really connect with small business owners and operators, and see their passion shine.
No breakfast date is complete without takeaway pastries in our household, and Cherry and Grapes definitely deliver in this department. I’d heard ahhhh-mazing things about their croissants, and I was really pleased to finally try them for myself.
We got one savoury and one sweet. The CNY special with pork floss and then the famed peanut butter and cherry jam one. My lord. Crispy, flaky layers of croissant was enough to blow us away, but then the respective fillings also were just plain delicious. I can’t describe enough how much I am obsessing over the PB&J one and the satisfyingly generous filling inside. And yes, I have gone back and bought this again – can you blame me?!
