Poke is on the rise here in Perth. And while it’s not the traditional style you’ll find gracing the shores of tropical Hawaii, our version is a healthier offering generally that has an abundance of vegetables and in some cases the option to forgo the rice in exchange for more salad leaves. Cue: Ahi Poke which has opened not one but two stores in Perth City in quick succession.
Their opening week at their venue near my work (just off St Georges Terrace) saw them offering buy one get one free, and they also extended a free bowl my way to try it out. With the sun shining I headed down with a group of colleagues to soak in the last vestiges of warm weather and enjoy fresh bowls of what we hoped was tasty goodness.
If you haven’t tried poke before, it’s delicious! Generally made with sushi rice, sashimi or in some cases cooked seafood, salad and seaweed, it is refreshing and a healthy alternative to your normal lunchtime meal.
We tried a range of their suggested poke bowls. From tuna with mango and crab meat, to salmon with avocado and sesame dressing, or the kingfish with wasabi mayonnaise – they were all delightfully fresh and vibrant. While the price point is on the higher side for casual lunch dining ($15-17 plus more if you want avocado), it is good for you and packs a punch in flavour. I would like to see more sashimi as it is a bit light on, but I am an absolute fiend when it comes to raw fish so it’s not surprising I feel this way.
So if you’re in the mood for something different – check out Ahi Poke. It’s also open in Yagan Square which has much longer trading hours meaning you have more windows to get that poke tastiness in your mouth. Yum!
