It’s a little hole in the wall, blink and you’ll miss it cafe in East Freo – and yet Ari & Esmay is so much more. Creator of beautiful cakes, slingers of coffee, and then there’s the high teas they hold on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in their upstairs loft.
I was recently invited to come down one weekend, which I happily accepted so I could take my bestie Carly with me to enjoy the experience with. She recently moved to Canada so we were keen on sharing as many meals and treats as we could before we left, so this was right up our alley.
The high tea at Ari & Esmay is $60.00 per person, to which you can add on a glass of bubbles ($10.00), or a bottle of bubbles ($50.00) or a small but oh so gorgeous cake ($40.00).
The high tea comes with bottomless coffee and tea – the latter of which comes with a great selection to choose from. I started off with a beautiful rose tea, before moving to a Turkish apple style one later whereas Carly enjoyed a chamomile, followed by a lemongrass and ginger.
I would have liked it if they left the teapots on our table since we’re both avid tea guzzlers and were downing them too quick, but that’s just a side note – and a result of the tea selection being just so lovely.
The high tea stand is made up of three tiers: sweet, savoury and then scones with jam and cream.
On the sweet stand there were French macarons, raspberry cheesecake, strawberry and cream brownie and a lemon meringue tart. The cheesecake was by far the showstopper. Covered in a pale pink glaze, it was ethereally light and just slightly sweet rather than cloying. Carly and I were both head over heels in love with this dessert – though the lemon meringue was a close second. Bright, sour and just sugary enough to let you know you’re on a sweet course. Yum.
The savoury tier was made up of cucumber sandwiches, smoked salmon pinwheels – and the standout chicken and leek vol au vent. Gorgeous, flaky pastry just jam packed full of flavour. Since Carly has fructose malabsorption her tart was mine for the taking too which I was all too happy to oblige.
As far as high tea offerings in Perth go, Ari & Esmay bring a strong game. I love the more eclectic, vintage style and the delicate touch with their desserts. Considering I’ve been creeping on their cakes and tarts for awhile now, it was lovely to finally get the chance to sample their wares.
Relaxing in the kiss of sunlight as it streamed through the window, enjoying bubbles, tea and bites. This is the ideal way to spend a Sunday.
