Christmas in the City of Perth

It’s December and beginning to feel a lot like Christmas! Working in the City of Perth I’m pretty fortunate that it’s not just the shops and restaurants around me turning it on, but the city itself is alive with the spirit of the season. And my favourite? It’s definitely the Christmas lights trail which is bringing dazzle and sparkle to evenings with 18 different light installations to see.

I set up about recently to discover some of the installations for myself. It was a relatively cool evening, but the balmy nights are well on their way – and the clear skies made the lights glow even brighter.

From the giant Christmas tree in Yagan Square next to Santa’s train, to the Magical Castle in the Cultural Centre, to the giant bauble at the State Theatre… they all had me feeling like a big kid in a candy store – snapping away and getting caught up with the magic of the moment.

Running from 16 November to 24 December with lights turning on from 6pm, I’ve only just begun exploring the trail. And I definitely recommend you do too, as it’s the best way to get into the spirit of things. Find out more or get a map of the trail here

Now while the lights trail is totally my jam, there is so much more to do this month in the lead up to 25 December. Here’s my top picks:

– the Christmas festival at Perth City Farm on 5 December (local designers, musicians and bites – entry for a gold coin donation)
– the Christmas markets at Cathedral Square on 8 December (craft gifts, homewares, decorations and gourmet packaged food)
– Christmas symphony in the city on 15 December (it’s free and WA’s largest outdoor classical music event)

Plus there are a heap of food, drink and entertainment specials to make this month even grander than ever.

I’ll be beelining over to the Twilight Hawker Markets this Friday (YUM) after a night prior at Palace Cinemas for their Festive Thursdays deal. Two movie tickets with two glasses of prosecco for only $51. Now that is definitely a bargain! And of course I’ll need dinner too, which I’ve already picked to be the popcorn shrimp open sandwich at Brotzeit German Bier Bar. I mean would you look at it – it’s glorious!

Oh Christmas: you really are the most wonderful time of the year. And the ideal time to head into the City of Perth not just for present shopping, but to treat yourself and your senses.
