The opening of Filos & Yiros

Filos & Yiros

Since opening in 2014, Brika has become one of Perth’s favourite Greek dining destinations. But while nighttimes there are best spent over plates of meze, with hands ripping chunks of pita to dunk in dips, or wrap around grilled meats, lunchtime has now become a completely different story. Born from owner Simon Psaros’s desire to celebrate iconic Greek street food, they’ve now launched a literal hole in the wall called Filos and Yiros.

What’s better than a takeaway window offering staples like spiral wound filo pastries (take your pick of fillings like spanakopita, bougatsa and loukanikopita), yiros, haloumi, patates and more? Heading down recently for their grand opening, I really couldn’t believe how wonderful it all sounded.

Filos & Yiros

Yiros (or what we might know locally as gyros or kebabs) are a great lunchtime staple. Filled with rotisserie cooked meats, chips, tomato, onion and tzatziki, these fluffy pita wraps are pretty damn epic.

“People can enjoy with a friend (filos) and reminisce about being back in a beautiful Greek island or dream about being there! There is nothing quite like a yiros or spanakopita that takes you to Greece quicker if you close your eyes whilst biting in,” said Psaros of his philosophy.

They were just the thing to enjoy with my guy after treating ourselves to a hot stone massage up the road at Keturah. We left feeling relaxed, then kept that momentum going while chowing down at Filos and Yiros grand opening. With lots of people milling around us, it didn’t detract from the experience one little bit.

Jeremy’s lamb yiros ($11.00) was easily the winner of the day, with the meat so unctuous and finger licking good. While I really enjoyed my chicken yiros ($11.00), I found myself suffering from immense food envy. Luckily he let me sneak a couple bites!

And while the spanakopita called my name (I do love my cheese and spinach combo), we tried the bougatsa instead for something different – and a little cheeky sweet ending. The wobbly custard inside was a delight, and just the thing to kick start our Saturday! The filo pastry was flaky and buttery – yum.

Bring your filos (Green for friends) and enjoy some filos and yiros at Brika’s new offering. It’s a super cost effective lunch option you will be raving about for weeks to come. Opa!
