Sometimes I can be my own worst enemy at work. It’s no secret that I love what I do, and that I’ve always been quite ambitious in the professional sense. So often I find myself working late, I’m always in early and some weekends I just have to plow through the backlog so the week ahead isn’t too crazy. And with all that, it means I often will have lunch at my desk – but I do relish the opportunity to get away if I can.
Recently I did just that, opting for a lunch on what was one of our first post-winter sunny days at the Office on Angove. I’ve eaten here hastily once before, but was yet to return and give it a second chance.
The menu can only be described as ‘cheffy’, with dishes that look beautiful – but the proof is definitely in the taste. And my two dining companions and I were quick to choose the ones we wanted to try, and before we knew it they were pumping out of the kitchen.
The pork hock with black pudding, poached egg and brioche was Bryony’s, with an added side of haloumi to enjoy. It was quite a big portion size, which I was pleased to see because my first tip here had seen quite restrained plating and servings.
The pork was plentiful, the egg yolk gooey. A touch of romesco rounded out the flavours on the plate.
For Jocelyn, the mushrooms on potato hash were calling her name and I could see why. With confit onions and dots of goats curd surrounding, it was a well matched combination of ingredients, tastes and textures.
The cured ocean trout with creme fraiche, capers, radish and pomegranate was described as a deconstructed salad – something that actually put me off before I decided to give it a whirl anyway. I’m so glad I did! Not only did it look visually stunning, it was bursting with sweet, salty and sour goodness.
And yes, I did add on a side of potato hash because I am all about potatoes. As much as I enjoyed my dish, the hash was the highlight and something I’d happily order again. Maybe a cheeky pitstop pre-work one day soon? It’s definitely calling my name…
I’m actually really glad I gave the Office on Angove another try. While my first visit was enjoyable enough, the return showcased to me the good work they’re doing there. And since I work only a minute’s walk away, it’s great knowing I have it as a close option to consider.
A lovely lunch with friends. And when I returned to the office, I was greeted by these beauties as a special delivery. Flowers definitely are the key to my heart, even after all these years together with Jeremy.
